Healthy eating

Fruit and Vegetables

It is common knowledge that half of all cancers could be prevented by simple changes to a person's lifestyle.   One part of this is healthy eating and diet, and if maintained sensibly the risk of cancer is reduced greatly.

Complementary Cancer Care Trust advocates healthy eating and a well-balanced diet to promote general wellbeing.

These days our eating habits consist of so many different foods, making it difficult to discover exactly which ones increase the risk of cancer or which ones can help to prevent it.

Eating a balanced diet that includes fruit and vegetables ('5-a-day') along with reducing our intake of red and processed meats, and saturated fats will help lower the risk of heart disease, cancer and obesity.

According to research the average person in the UK eats 3 portions of fruit and vegetables each day.   The NHS promotes the 5-a-day programme and aims to assist people's thinking by highlighting the benefits of eating more fruit and vegetables.

For further details of the NHS 5-a-day guidelines, benefits and top tips view their website  www.5aday.nhs.uk.

In our Healthy Eating section we provide a range of own guidelines and recipes.
